Celebrating the Diversity of Our Community

At the end of last term, Hockerill conducted a Cultural Heritage Survey, inviting students and staff to reflect on the question:

“Which county or countries do you associate with your cultural heritage?”

The results are in, and they reveal the incredible diversity within our community, with participants identifying connections to over 80 countries worldwide!

We recognise that cultural heritage is a complex and multifaceted concept, not limited to nationality or ethnicity. Participants interpreted it in their own way, with many selecting more than one country. It was particularly notable that several identified with one or more constituent parts of the UK, including England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Britain, and the UK—highlighting the richness of cultural identity even within a single nation.

Regional Representation:

• Europe: 27 countries

• Africa: 15 countries

• Asia: 14 countries

• Caribbean: 8 countries

• Middle East: 8 countries

• South & Central America: 5 countries

• Australasia: 2 countries

• North America: 2 countries

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, international mindedness is central to our ethos. This encompasses intercultural understanding, global engagement, and multilingualism—values we strive to uphold every day.

We are proud to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our students, staff, and families, ensuring everyone feels welcomed and valued as part of the Hockerill community.
