Hockerill Netball Displays Unwavering Team Spirit

Hockerill Netball Displays Unwavering Team Spirit

There’s something truly special about Saturday sports fixtures. From the early morning buzz of students assembling in their sports kit by the minibuses to the anticipation of heading offsite to play the sport they love, Saturday mornings are a highlight of the week.

On Saturday, 25th January, we traveled to Bancroft’s School for a netball tournament, taking nearly 60 students. Excitement was in the air as we loaded the coach and minibus, accompanied by shouts of “Good luck!” from those staying behind. It is in these moments, as we watch students from different year groups come together as we prepare to leave Hockerill that school spirit is at its finest.

As always, the journey was filled with the unmistakable soundtrack of our students singing. Special thanks go to the Year 10 parents for their musical influence—Year 10 always present an impressive playlist, seamlessly blending 90s R&B, Motown classics, deep house, and even club anthems. The energy and camaraderie on the way to and from matches are unforgettable.

Despite the fierce competition—netball standards are exceptionally high in both Hertfordshire and neighboring Essex—our Hockerill students consistently embody the values of the IB. They show resilience, encourage one another, and represent the College with pride, no matter the result.

Post-match, we are welcomed into the opposing school’s clubhouse for snacks and drinks, where our students have the opportunity to mingle with their peers. Staff at other schools often comment on how impeccably our students present themselves and how polite and well-mannered they are. This consistent feedback fills us with pride, as does seeing our captains and other students thank the opposing staff before we leave, a gesture that truly reflects their character.

Having attended countless Saturday fixtures for both boys and girls during my time at Hockerill, I’m reminded every time of how fortunate I am to share these experiences with our students. These moments—of triumphs, defeats, and unshakable team spirit—will remain with them long after their school days are over. While grades and lessons are important, it’s memories like these that truly define their time at Hockerill, and we look forward to organising and attending many more.
