Heritage Harmonies
On Thursday 10th October, the College hosted a vibrant Heritage Harmonies Showcase in celebration of Black History Month. The event featured an array of talented students who captivated the audience with powerful performances of music, poetry, dance, and a lively fashion show, all celebrating diverse cultural expressions.
The theme of this year’s Black History Month, “Reclaiming Narratives,” echoed throughout the evening, with students performing original raps and poetry that highlighted stories of strength, heritage, and resilience. A heartfelt tribute to the late poet Benjamin Zephaniah featured a moving recital of his renowned poem, “Dis Poetry.” Musical performances spanned genres and eras, with students drawing inspiration from legends such as Erykah Badu, Sam Cooke, Rihanna, and Count Basie.
"We are incredibly proud of the creativity and passion our students displayed during the Heritage Harmonies Showcase," said Principal, David Woods. "It was truly a night to remember, highlighting the rich tapestry of Black culture and history. The performances not only entertained but also educated, encouraging everyone to reflect on the importance of reclaiming narratives and celebrating diversity."
The fashion show added a vibrant visual element to the night, with students proudly displaying cultural outfits that reflected their backgrounds and stories. The event fostered a strong sense of community and solidarity, encouraging all attendees to honour and amplify the richness of Black culture.
Proceeds from the evening were donated to Black Mothers Matter and the East Herts Black Parents Assembly, organisations chosen by the students for their meaningful work in supporting and uplifting Black communities.
